EV5 in 2026: Preview, Context and Promise

A family with two children, a large stroller and gear for the weekend. A driver who covers 300 km a day between the city and the suburbs. These are exactly the people the Kia EV5 is aimed at, a compact BEV SUV that is entering additional markets in 2026 after debuting in China in 2023. This model focuses on space and a reasonable price, not track ambitions or futuristic gadgets.

Between the EV3 and EV9

The EV5 fills a gap in Kia's electric lineup. It arrives after the EV6 and the flagship EV9, but sits exactly where most families are looking for an everyday car. The designers applied the "Opposites United" philosophy and the distinctive "Digital Tiger Face", but gave it a more boxy, conventional shape. This is not an attempt to impress in a parking lot. It is a tool.

Architecture? A dedicated electric platform related to E-GMP (most likely a 400 V or N3 eK variant). Thanks to this, the interior is spacious without unnecessary compromises, while efficiency remains respectable. For a parent with luggage and a dog on the rear seat, that matters. Quite a lot.

Specifications and Technology: The Most Important EV5 Numbers

Time for some concrete figures. Because attractive design is one thing, and the car's real-world capabilities are another.

Key Dimensions and Capacity

The Kia EV5 measures approximately 4,610-4,615 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width and 1,675-1,715 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. The luggage compartment offers 513-566 l (according to the VDA standard), and after folding the rear seats it grows to approximately 1,714 l. Plus there is a front trunk of 44-67 l, which always comes in handy.

Powertrains, Range and Charging

The FWD version gets approximately 160 kW and 295-310 Nm, with a 0-100 km/h sprint in around 8.4-8.9 seconds. The AWD version delivers 230 kW, 480 Nm and accelerates in around 6.1-6.3 seconds. Top speed varies between 165 and 185 km/h, depending on the version.

Batteries? From 60.3-64.2 kWh (often LFP), through 81.4 kWh (NMC), up to around 88.1 kWh LFP in selected markets. WLTP range reaches 400-555 km, but note that North American estimates can be around 20% lower. Charging: AC 7-11 kW, DC up to 102-150 kW (10-80% in around 30 minutes), 400 V architecture, V2L and a heat pump included.

In terms of safety, it is worth mentioning the 5-star Euro NCAP and ANCAP ratings, with adult and child protection at around 83-85%. The interior? Panoramic displays (12.3" + 5" + 12.3"), optional HUD, Harman/Kardon audio system, seat massage functions and a fingerprint scanner. Quite well equipped for a family SUV.

Markets, Pricing and Availability in 2026

Where and When

The Kia EV5 began its journey in China, with production starting at the Yancheng plant in late 2023 and early 2024. From there, the vehicle moved into export markets. Australia and New Zealand received their units during 2024, followed by Korea and Europe in the second half of 2025. The Philippines joined in April 2026. Canada? Spring or early summer 2026, as a 2027 model year vehicle, already equipped with a Tesla-compatible NACS port. The U.S. market, however, remains unconfirmed, which is somewhat surprising, but that is the current situation.

How Much Does It Cost and What Influences the Price

Prices vary considerably depending on the market, local taxes and the battery configuration:

  • The UK starts at around £39,000
  • Australia offers a range of approximately AUD 56,000-80,000 (drive-away pricing)
  • Canada starts at roughly CAD 43,500 MSRP

Pricing levels also depend on whether the manufacturer uses LFP batteries (FinDreams or BYD) or NMC batteries (CATL), as this affects both cost and range. Equipment configurations may differ between regions; for example, the heat pump may be optional or standard. A facelift is expected by the end of 2026 (Australia will receive it in Q4), mainly bringing suspension, steering and infotainment updates.

EV5 as a Sign of the Times – A Short Conclusion

The Kia EV5 arrives at a time when electric vehicles are no longer a niche product and are becoming the first choice for families looking for a sensible long-term car. Practicality, range and price (assuming it remains competitive) add up to more than just a product offering – it is a step towards the normalization of BEVs in a segment that until recently was dominated by combustion-powered SUVs. Expansion into additional markets in 2025 and the announced facelift show that the model is maturing according to a natural product cycle.

For many families, this may be the first electric vehicle that makes sense without compromises. And that is exactly the point.
